Nanoparticles and Sunscreen

Module Description:

This module, created by the Center for Nanotechnology Education (Nano-Link), introduces students to the function of sunscreen and how nanoparticles can be used as protection against ultraviolet radiation. During the module students will "... compare the effectiveness of conventual (chemical-based) and nanoparticle-based sunscreens." The student outcomes of the module are:

• Define the wavelengths and types of ultraviolet radiation
• Describe the mechanisms of light absorption and light scattering
• Explain the difference in the mechanism of action of chemical sunscreens and inorganic oxide nanoparticle sunscreens
• Compare the Efficacy of different sunscreen products by testing them

Module Contents:

This module includes a 15-page guide, a PowerPoint presentation, and a learning standards alignment guide. The learning guide includes an abstract, outcomes, background information, an activity description and procedure, instructor notes, and more.

Versions in Spanish are also included for most of the module documents. 

For orientation purposes Nanoparticles and Sunscreen - Nano-Link.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this module.
