This resource is provided by the National Resource Center for Materials Technology Education (MatEdU) and is the sixth chapter from the MatEdU Science Educational Handbook. This handbook is designed to offer flexibility and adaptability in teaching materials science education and training. Its numerous activities serve as practical demonstrations of scientific principles that can be integrated into any curriculum. The primary objective of the Handbook is to equip programs with the necessary tools to introduce materials science concepts effectively, while also providing high-quality instruction for further study in the subject.

Chapter 6 "provides a general introduction to the methodology of designing materials to meet engineering requirements." This chapter includes the following units: Identifying and Securing Appropriate Materials for Engineering Design, Engineering Design 'Constraints' Placed on Material Performance, and Engineering Design for Intelligent Material Lifetime Performance. The chapter also includes instructors guides, instructor notes, and presentation slides.
