This resource is provided by the National Resource Center for Materials Technology Education (MatEdU) and is the second chapter from the MatEdU Science Educational Handbook. This handbook is designed to offer flexibility and adaptability in teaching materials science education and training. Its numerous activities serve as practical demonstrations of scientific principles that can be integrated into any curriculum. The primary objective of the Handbook is to equip programs with the necessary tools to introduce materials science concepts effectively, while also providing high-quality instruction for further study in the subject.

Chapter 2 "provides students with an introduction to metals ans alloys, their properties, and how metal properties are influenced by other factors." This chapter includes the following units: Introduction to Metals Properties, Structure and Properties of Iron and Steel, Metal Corrosion, Phase change experiment: Bobby Pins and Nitinol, Effect of Rolling and Annealing on Hardness of Brass, and more. The chapter also includes instructors guides, instructor notes, and presentation slides.
