BioMEMS Therapeutic Overview Learning Module

Module Description:

This module, from Support Center for Microsystems Education (SCME), provides "introductory material on various Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) that are being designed or currently being used for therapeutics." This module is divided into the following four units: Knowledge Probe (KP or pre-test), Primary Knowledge (PK) reading material, Marketing a Therapeutics BioMEMS Activity, and Final Assessment.

Module Contents: 

This module includes four instructor guides, three participant guides, and two presentations. PDF and DOC versions are provided for all of the guides. The included guides are Therapeutic BioMEMS Overview Primary Knowledge, Therapeutics BioMEMS Overview Learning Module, an activity, and an assessment. Instructor guides include additional content such as instructor notes and questions and answers.

Therapeutic BioMEMS Overview Primary Knowledge is an instructional unit with the following learning objectives:

• Explain why microtechnology is advantageous for therapeutics.
• Describe a therapeutic bioMEMS device and explain how it works.
• List and define the areas of medicine that could benefit from microtechnology.

The following sections are included in this unit guide: Introduction, Learning Module Objectives, The Possibilities, Therapeutics for Diabetes: The Disease, Therapeutics for Diabetes: The Solution, The Senseonic Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM), Other Therapeutic Drug Delivery Applications, Vesicle for Drug Delivery, and more. 

The Therapeutic BioMEMS Overview Knowledge Probe (pre-test), located within the Therapeutics BioMEMS Overview Learning Module guide, includes 10 multiple choice questions and is intended to be given at the start of the module.

In the Marketing a Therapeutic BioMEMS Activity, students "further explore a specific bioMEMS therapeutic device by creating a brochure for the marketing of the device." At the conclusion of the activity, students will be able to "to explain the advantages, design and proper use of one therapeutic device incorporating MEMS technology."

The Assessment for Therapeutic BioMEMS Overview includes 10 multiple choice questions and is intended to be given at the conclusion of the module. 

Two presentations are also included with the following titles: Retinal Prosthesis and Therapeutic BioMEMS Overview. Each presentation provides a unit overview, objectives, and additional information on how and why "microtechnology could be advantageous for therapeutics." The presentations are provided in both PDF and PowerPoint formats.

For orientation purposes App_BioMEM_KP40_IG.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this module.
