Normandale Community College (NCC) will host a two-day, Plasma-Aided Manufacturing Workshop for high school, community college and university faculty involved in technician education on March 19th and 20th, 2009. This workshop is funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education Program. The two-day workshop will cover the following topics: • Introduction to Plasma Physics • Plasma Sources • Transmission Line Fundamentals • RF Delivery & Impedance Matching • Sputtering as a Manufacturing Process. The workshop will be divided between classroom presentations/discussions and hands-on laboratory sessions. Participants will view demonstrations and perform experiments in NCC’s Plasma Technology Laboratory. The workshop will begin at 8:30 am on, March 19th, and conclude at 4:00 pm on Friday, March 20th. NCC’s grant will cover the cost of all workshop materials, lodging for 3 nights, meals, and local transportation in Bloomington, MN. This starts with a challenge for engineers and tech: “On and annualized basis, find a half million seconds for every mold in the shop.� Partly this is done to keep the engineers and techs interested. More importantly it allows money to be generated as both extra profit for the company and money available to give out raises for a successful completion of this challenge. The presentation starts looking at a typical part. Then reviews what would happen if segments of the process were improved: Reduced scrap, reduced cycle time, regrind usage enhancement, weight reduction and reduced setup times. While the cumulative effect of all of these improvements isn’t completely additive it shows how this goal can be achieved.

CICMHE sponsors a Material Handling Teachers Institute (MHTI) to prepare new faculty for instruction in the field of materials handling as well as to enhance the skills of experienced faculty. MHTI is for both engineering and business faculty who are directly involved in the teaching of material flow systems and/or facility logistics. It will feature a wide range of industry and academic presentations, plant and lab tours, and social activities designed to promote better teaching of material handling and facilities design courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels. The National Science Foundation has provided grant funding for the Mid Pacific Information and Communications Technologies Center to coordinate, improve, and promote ICT education, with an emphasis on 2-year colleges, in northern California, northern Nevada, southern Oregan, Hawaii and the Pacific Territories. Description: Modern society runs on electricity, and as standards of living increase worldwide, electricity represents the fastest growing form of energy use. This growth, coupled with ongoing advances in technology, presents significant opportunities to rethink the way we produce, utilize, and manage electricity. By some estimates, we can increase currently available electric energy up to 20% through "smart" management and devices. Technology related to electricity utilization can be thoughtfully integrated into a broad range of technician and technology education programs.

Mr. Carrese will focus on workforce needs and demands in the energy efficiency sector. He will present his center's study of the firms in the Bay Area that hire energy efficiency workers in technical occupations, and report on the projected job growth for these occupations and the workforce needs and challenges of employers. In addition, he will identify college programs related to energy efficiency occupations and discuss how results from his region may be translated across the country.

Mr. Hatano will describe the industry's views of the opportunities in the energy efficiency area. He will also discuss the challenges and issues raised by public policy and government initiatives to promote this sector.

The functionality of a GPS will be explored and how it can be used with Google Earth and ArcMap. Data will be downloaded from the GPS into a computer using free software. GPS units will be provided to the participants to use at the workshops, but participants can bring their own units if they would like.
