Module Description

The NCSR Marine Fisheries Series is provided by the Northwest Center for Sustainable Resources and includes ten modules. This series is designed to cover issues related to "marine fisheries with an emphasis on those species that are commercially harvested in the United States." The ten modules include:

Career Opportunities Outdoors and Underwater

The ATETV project delivers web-based videos to connect students to careers in advanced technology. In this episode of ATETV, marine technology and environmental technology are discussed. A student competition of remotely operated underwater vehicle technology is shown in the video. Employees with training and experience in this technology are in high demand in the workforce, and industry is using such competitions as scouting opportunities. In technological programs like the ones shown here, students gain hands-on experience that prepares them for the workplace. This video runs 7:01 minutes in length.

Community Connection

Students Recognized for Award-Winning Essays at Annual NISOD Conference

Community College Week and the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) recently honored the winners of the annual Scott Wright Student Essay Contest at the NISOD annual conference in Austin, Texas.

The award is named for award-winning journalist Scott Wright, who was served as editor of Community College Week. Students who entered the contest were asked to write about a faculty member, staff member, or administrator who made an impact on their education.

The students who wrote the inspirational essays are from El Centro College in Dallas, TX; Portland Community College in Portland, OR; and Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, FL.

One of the students, Sofia Velasquez of Portland Community College, titled her essay "Elevating My Dreams One Step at a Time." Velasquez retraced her family's struggle with homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, and self-defeating attitudes about not succeeding in college.

She attributed much of her collegiate success to an inspirational relationship with faculty member Teela Foxworth, who encouraged her to sign up for a scholarship opportunity to study abroad in Peru. Velasquez wrote: "Ms. Foxworth continues to play a huge role in my life and overall success in college. It is to her, that I owe my continuous success as I continue to take risks, step into leadership positions on campus, and dream bigger. I no longer fight memories, I embrace them and accept the fact that they made me stronger."

The three winning students and the three employees featured in the essays each received an award of $1,000, plus recognition at the NISOD conference. Additionally, each student's college received a complimentary 2018-2019 NISOD membership.

ATE Success Tips: Websites

If your project or center has a website, have you investigated how it appears on a mobile screen? To that end, what actually makes a good mobile site?

Google and AnswerLab conducted a user experience research study on this subject, and the answers to that question include helpful design principles.

  • On the homepage of your site, keep important options front and center. If an option is buried "below the fold," or, the part of the page that can't be seen without scrolling down, important options are easily missed.
  • Keep menus uncomplicated. Keeping a mobile user's patience in mind is key when including a multi-faceted menu.
  • Make the site search option visible. Digging around for where to search is daunting, so including a search field in a visible place is key.

Over a decade and a half, community college enrollment for part-time students who are younger than 18 has more than doubled, jumping from 287,000 in 2001, to more than 635,000 by 2015 - an increase of 122 percent.

From filmmaker Brady Harlan, the creator Numberphile and the Periodic Table of Videos, comes Computerphile: a YouTube series that addresses all things computer science. On this YouTube channel, which is updated multiple times a week, visitors will find dozens of videos that may be of interest. Many of these videos incorporate interviews with a variety of experts. For instance, one recent video entitled "Current State of Quantum Computing," features an interview with Robert Smith, Director of Software Engineering at Rigetti Computing. In another recent episode, Ross Anderson of the University of Cambridge discusses the legal aspects of Bitcoin. Visitors can browse previous videos by themed playlists including neural networks; SGML HTML XML; the deep, dark web; and favorites.

Global Hydrology and Climate Center

This NASA website displays Interactive Global Geostationary Weather Satellite Images collected by GOES, GMS-5, and METEOSAT-7. Users can find captivating real-time images of visible, infrared, and water vapor for most areas of the world. Each image can be viewed as a single image or as an animation. Users not familiar with satellite images can find educational materials describing the unique features presented in each of the three types of images. The satellite composite images at the end of the website provide users with an overall sense of the weather patterns for large areas of the Earth.

When Things Get Small

What happens when things get small? And better yet, what does a bowl of peanuts the size of a sports stadium have in common with a shrinking elephant? You'll have to watch this engaging film created by the University of California at San Diego's (UCSD) "TV" project. The project brings together short films on all manner of subjects, and this fun and insightful look into nanoscience and its uses is hosted by Adam Smith and "wacky physicist" Ivan Schuller. The 27-minute film is a great introduction to the world of nanoscience and the "real-life quest to create the smallest magnet ever known." That's not all, as there are dozens of other videos on the website that investigate nanotechnology and science in the "More Nanoscience" area on the right-hand side of the page.
