Welcome to the ATE Central Connection! Published the first Monday of each month, the ATE Central Connection is meant to disseminate information to and about ATE centers and projects, providing you with up-to-date ATE news, events, reminders, as well as highlighting new centers, projects, and resources. In addition, we will also highlight an educational topic with complementary resources found within ATE Central to help illustrate how ATE resources can be used in the classroom.

We want the ATE Central Connection to be a valuable tool; please e-mail info@atecentral.net with any suggestions about how to make the ATE Central Connection more useful for you or to suggest any information you would like to see in an upcoming issue.

STEM/Robotics Camp Handbook: A “How To” Promising Practices Guide to Summer STEM CAMPS

atecentral.net/downloads/839/CARCAM%20STEM%20Camp%20Handbook%202016.pdf

This 28-page STEM/Robotics Camp Promising Practices Guide from CARCAM, the Consortium for Alabama Regional Center for Automotive Manufacturing, is directed at those educators or STEM professionals who would like to be guided "through the process of planning, developing, and offering successful STEM/Robotics Camps for high school students interested in automated manufacturing..." Garnered from nine years of Southern Automotive Corridor colleges in the CARCAM consortium 's own experience in sponsoring summer robotic camps, this guide outlines camp purposes and goals as well as such administrative tasks as funding the camps, finding a location, getting the equipment needed, and conducting communications. The appendices include document templates and examples, including camp flyers, release forms, participation certificates, and follow-up surveys.

Robotics Academy

education.rec.ri.cmu.edu

Based at Carnegie Mellon University, the Robotics Academy is designed to help young people learn about the world of robotics through interactive activities, videos, and lesson plans. First-time visitors can check in on the "Educators" area to learn about the STEM-based curriculum and educational standards used throughout the site's materials. In the "Curriculum" area, visitors can view video clips that address robotic engineering, along with lesson plans. Some of the curricular activities here are also available in Spanish. Visitors should also check out their blog, as it features highlights from events like the VEX Robotics World Championships and upcoming online chat sessions. Also the site contains building instructions and details on how to enter the aforementioned VEX Robotics championships, which encourage students and hobbyists to build real robots.

ATE Central Webinar: The Importance of Digital Archiving for ATE

Working with MATEC NetWorks, last month ATE Central provided an online presentation on the importance of digital archiving for the ATE Community. The complete webinar, which runs just over 75 minutes in length, is now available for viewing.

Rachael Bower and Kendra Bouda reviewed what digital archiving is, why archiving benefits ATE, and how ATE Central can help with your project or center’s archiving efforts. Whether you’re just getting started with ATE, or you’ve been part of the community for a while, this webinar can be a helpful resource, providing helpful information about sustaining your project or center’s deliverables beyond the life of your ATE funding.

Curious about what was covered? These five questions offer a sneak peek:

What is an archive?

  • An archive is a collection of materials – often comprised of primary source documents – that has been preserved for its enduring value. For ATE, the Archive is a virtual space where deliverables and select administrative documents are collected, stored, and made available in digital format.

Why should I archive?

  • No matter how far along you are in meeting the goals of your project or center, dissemination and continued access to the materials you create are vital. By archiving your materials with ATE Central, your colleagues and fellow ATE grantees can benefit from the easy access that a central archive provides.

Am I required to archive with ATE Central?

  • While we encourage all ATE grantees to consider archiving their material, the requirement applies to new grantees that have applied and received funding under solicitation NSF 14-577. Additionally, those who receive new funding (e.g. a center that transitions from regional to national or from national to support center; or a project or center that receives a second round of funding) are also required to archive deliverables created under the new award.

If I am required to archive with ATE Central, what must I archive?

  • The deliverables created by your project or center will make up the majority of your archival material. Depending on the scope of your project or center’s work, this might include course content, informational videos, research reports, or other items created during the lifecycle of your grant.

When should I get started and how do I plan for archiving with ATE Central?

  • The earlier the better! The sooner you prepare to archive with ATE Central, the easier it will be. Ideally, you’ll start planning to archive before you create your very first deliverable. But don’t feel discouraged if you are mid-grant or even at the end of your grant and haven’t started archiving. The archiving checklist, discussed in detail in the webinar, will help guide you through the process.

In addition to these questions, the webinar covers an array of other concerns, such as specific guidelines for submitting resources to the Archive.

More information about the ATE Central Archiving Service can be found on the ATE Central portal. For specific questions about archiving, don’t hesitate to contact Metadata and Information Specialist Kendra Bouda, at kbouda@atecentral.net.

ATE Success Tips: Social Media

How to Optimize Images for Social Media

For many ATE projects and centers, having a strong social media presence is an important component of our outreach efforts. From Facebook to LinkedIn to Twitter, these platforms offer a great space to share the latest news, increase audience awareness, and build a sense of community. As windows into the work being done by your project or center, profile and banner images are instrumental in the way we present our work. However, navigating the unique image requirements of each individual outlet can be daunting.

This vibrant infographic serves as a one-stop shop, providing dimensions and general guidelines for choosing images best suited for eight of the most popular social media sites.
