Design Challenge: Incorporating Shape Memory Alloys into Rube Goldberg Devices
Published by the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network, this activity allows students to design their own Rube Goldberg device which incorporates shape memory alloys. The goals of the lesson are "encourage students to compare and contrast science and technology; experimental design and industrial design; and physics and its impact on nanotechnology." This module is designed to introduce and let student teams design their devices in class and create a commercial for their device. Background readings, worksheets, project directions and procedures, rubrics, and the needed materials are given on this site. It's a great project for students to dive in and begin creating their own devices using nanotechnology.
