Pandemic Inspired Pedagogical Innovations

This video, from the 2021 Esri Education Summit, provides three presentations on pandemic inspired pedagogical innovations. Presentations highlight how educators and students used web GIS tools and innovative approaches to stay engaged and keep learning on track during the COVID-19 pandemic. Miriam Olivares, TC Chakraborty, and Maria A. Moreno from Yale University present on why and how they developed a geospatial learning accelerator for a remote biology laboratory classroom. The people involved in this project are highlighted, the course itself and how it was conducted is explored, and GIS resources and developments are discussed. Alicia De Toro from DeAnza College presents on the use of GIS for remote environmental science labs. The pandemic, a pedagogy praxis, conservation biology, the labs themselves, and an environmental speaker series are highlighted. Seda Salap Ayca from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst highlights a GIS programming course and how students overcame accessibility issues during the pandemic. Challenges and solutions are discussed. Jupyter Notebooks and ArcGIS Pro are also explored.
