This learning module, from the National Center for Autonomous Technologies (NCAT), provides four lessons on crash prevention for Middle School students. Lesson one explores how reaction times affect driving and driving safety. Lesson two explores stopping distance and the physical concepts of surface friction according to pavement types, and highlights the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) sensors and communication networks. Lesson three explores how weather conditions affect driving. Lesson four explores traffic congestion and technologies used to inform drivers of road conditions. Learning outcomes include some of the following: 

  • Students will use the scientific method to calculate reaction times using a hands-on and computer-based method.
  • Students will use graphical methods to analyze class data.
  • Students will use mathematical formulas to calculate stopping distances.
  • Students will learn how to use internet-based databases.
