Motors and Electrical Systems
Course Description:
This 2-credit course highlights how motors and transformers are utilized in industrial applications. In the course, students wire and troubleshoot single and 3 phase AC motors, DC Motors, and stepper and servo motors using ladder diagrams. Students also program and wire variable frequency drives (VFD's) to control 3 phase AC motors. All topics are covered alongside failure modes, troubleshooting and the replacement of devices.
The following are an example of competencies assessed in the course:
- Demonstrates the operating principle of a universal motor.
- Demonstrates the operating principles of a single phase transformer.
- Examines the operating principles of a 3 phase transformer.
- Demonstrates the operation and control of single phase and three phase induction motors.
