Precision Agriculture- Lesson 3 Materials

Lesson Description:

This lesson is the last of three in the Introduction to Agriculture unit of a precision agriculture education series provided by Northeast Community College. These lessons are intended to teach "... broad scale concepts of precision agriculture, the components that make it possible, how it can impact farm management decision making, and data usability." The following are objectives for the third lesson:

• Learn the differences between traditional farming practices verses Precision Agriculture practices.
• Learn the process of data collection and its sources.
• Learn the process of Decision making using Precision Agriculture.
• Learn the concept of data layering to strengthen the quality of decisions.
• Learn the probable and possible outcomes of implementing Precision Agriculture.

Lesson Contents:

Lesson materials include an educator guide, two presentations, notes, a crossword puzzle and answer key, an activity, and an assignment and answer key. Most materials are provided in Word and PDF formats.

The 33-page Educator's Guide includes the following sections: What do I do with the data, Lesson Objectives, Vocabulary, Compare/Contrast Traditional Farming Practices with Precision Agriculture, Data gathering, Where does the data come from, How is the data collected, The Process of Making Decisions Using Precision Agriculture Data, and more. 

The 2-page homework assignment has students find the base temperature used in Growing Degree Days (GDD) of a number of different crops. Students then determine GDD calculations with the formulas and temperatures given.

For orientation purposes Precision Ag Lesson 3 Educator Guide.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this curriculum.
