Lesson Description:

This lesson is the seventh of nine lessons from the Vocational Math: Contextualized for Construction course that was taught at Madison Area Technical College. During this lesson, students work in groups followed by whole-class discussion to solve percent problems involving discounts, markup and margin in the context of purchasing materials for installing a floor, and charging a customer for the installation. This lesson uses the context of Problem Situation 1 in Lesson 1 for the quantities to purchase.

The expected total time for the lesson is 115 minutes. Students will need a Construction Master Calculator and Lesson 1 notes to complete this lesson. Related resources are available to view separately. Related resources include the Vocational Math Syllabus, Lesson 1, a 2018 National Construction Estimator, and a document on the Think Aloud teaching method.

Lesson Contents:

Lesson materials include a student lesson guide, an instructor guide, and supporting lesson documents. Supporting documents include class notes, a homework key, and a handout for extra practice.

The 8-page student guide includes lesson objectives, problem situations, and a mini lesson. The 20-page instructor guide includes prerequisite assumptions, competencies covered, a suggested timeline, specific objectives, problem situations with notes, and more.
