Last week our partners at the Singapore American School (SAS) hosted a Build-Your-Own ROV Workshop! 🌊⚙️ This was a fun, hands-on workshop activity where teachers and students designed, built, and piloted an ROV in the span of a few hours! New to underwater robotics, participants learned the basic anatomy of an ROV and were introduced to a preassembled controller system, materials for a frame, flotation for buoyancy, and simple, everyday materials that they could use to construct a tool to accomplish the mission ⚙️ These first-time teams were then presented with their own mission task to tackle, which was staged in the SAS swimming pool! The workshop was supported by SAS and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). It was part of the amazing activities, meetings, and exhibits that took place during Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) ⛴️ Special thanks to the amazing SAS teachers and the school's veteran One Degree North ROV team for preparing these new teams navigate their way to a future MATE competition! 👏 #StudentSuccess #STEMEducation #InnovationInEducation #Workshop #Watergame #Robotics

MATE ROV COMPETITION’s Build Your Own ROV workshop, a fun and hands-on activity where you'll design, build, and pilot an underwater robot in just 1-2 hours. After a fascinating introduction to underwater robots and their real-world applications, you'll dive into the basics of a remotely operated vehicle. You'll get to work with a preassembled controller system, materials for a frame, flotation for buoyancy, and simple, everyday items to construct tools for your mission. Once you're equipped with the knowledge and materials, you'll be presented with a mission task to tackle at the bottom of MATE ROV COMPETITION’s ocean – a swimming pool! Our goal is to provide you with the skills and experiences needed to bring these activities into your classroom or after-school clubs. This workshop was organized by the Marine Technology Society (MTS), Singapore American School, Science Centre Singapore Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). This workshop was conducted on the 28 March during 🚢 Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2025. 🔊 I had the opportunity to present on “Leveraging on Sensors and Robotics for Subsea Singapore” from port authority, commercial, and technology perspectives to the teachers and students. It was the same talk given to SAUVC 2025. https://lnkd.in/gCfMtUaF I hope this workshop will encourage more primary and secondary school teacher and student participants joining the underwater robotics competition arena and inspire innovation and transformation in the subsea industry! 🌊 Jill Zande Paul Booth Bien Aik (Daniel) Tan Chloe L. Check out this article from the Institute of Competition Sciences (ICS), where they discuss challenges teams face year to year in the MATE ROV Competition. 🌊 Just like in professional and collegiate sports, student robotics teams face a revolving door of talent, logistical challenges, and shifting priorities year to year. 📈 Maintaining excellence requires not just talent, but also strategic decision-making, adaptability, and a bit of luck. Perhaps, the difficulty of bringing all those elements together is a key component of what makes competition so thrilling!
