Tutorial Description:

This exercise, created by the Integrated Geospatial Education and Technology Training Project (iGETT), serves as a tutorial for advanced Geographic Information System (GIS) students within the framework of a remote sensing class or raster GIS class with a strong remote sensing component. The tutorial is divided into five exercises--four mandatory and one optional exercise--each covering various topics with a core focus on learning the imagery tools in ArcGis 10.

By completing the exercises, students will learn to develop critical thinking skills by using the image analysis tools in ArcGIS 10; demonstrate skills in using basic to advanced techniques related to professional grade GIS software (specifically imagery tools in ArcGIS 10); demonstrate skills in presenting and analyzing spatial data; and demonstrate skills in basic remote sensing interpretation using the image analysis tools and window.

All exercises (including the optional exercise) should take anywhere from 8 to 12 hours of class time, and require basic use of a PC, file management, and the use of the Internet. Students should also have a basic understanding of the use of ArcGIS 10 and the Spatial Analyst extension. Because the tutorial is intended to supplement and complement a class focused on remote sensing, it does not cover basic remote sensing concepts and discussions of sensors, data acquisition, data formats, and other basic aspects of remote sensing.
