Crystal Plane of Silicon
This animation, created by Support Center for Microsystems Education (SCME), "illustrates the crystal growth of silicon using a seed crystal (or unit cell) positioned to the (100) plane. The silicon crystal grows into a large ingot which is sliced into silicon wafers. To verify the (100) plane of the wafer, the wafer is broken or cleaved causing it to break at 90 degree angles." The supporting Crystallography Learning Module and activities can be downloaded from the SCME website under Educational Materials.
