Nanoparticle Pollutants

This lab, presented by the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network, introduces students to the interaction between plastics, nanotechnology, and the natural world. Students will "understand how nanoparticles in our oceans can carry toxic pollutants into our cells, and how this may interfere with proper physiological function of ocean and human life." As plastics break down as a result of alkaline ocean water a sunlight, the resulting particles become small enough to enter into our cells by crossing cell membranes. This lab will require three 55 minute class periods as well as two pre-lab classes and one post-lab group presentation.
