Properties of Fibers and Fabrics
This nine-page instructor guide outlines a laboratory activity testing the strength of fibers and fabrics. Students observe the properties of different fibers and fabrics and the differences between natural and synthetic fibers. This activity demonstrates why fibers may be chosen for different applications, and why fiber properties vary under different conditions. This activity was designed for high school and introductory college classrooms, and takes two class periods to complete.
This instructor guide includes the following sections: Module Objectives, MatEd Core Competencies Covered, Module Data, Part 1: Strength of Fibers, Part 2: Use of Fibers in Clothing, Supporting Materials: Test Machine, and an Evaluation Packet.
