Wetlands Management I - Determination and Delineation
Module Description:
The NCSR Wetland Ecology and Management Series is provided by the Northwest Center for Sustainable Resources and includes seven modules. This series “is designed to support the instruction of wetlands topics at the undergraduate level.” The seven modules include Wetlands – An Introduction, Wetlands - Then and Now, Wetlands Management I – Determination and Delineation, Wetlands Management II – Compensatory Mitigation, Wetlands and Climate Change, Wetlands and Hurricanes, and Wetland Restoration in the Everglades.
Wetlands Management I – Determination and Delineation is the third of seven modules. This module is “designed to provide instructors with lecture and laboratory materials that introduce the concepts and practices of wetland determination and delineation. Criteria for the identification of wetlands and accepted delineation methods as established by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are reviewed including field indicators of hydric soils, hydrology and wetland vegetation. Various sources of archived information commonly used in wetland determination and delineation are also described.”
Module Contents:
The PowerPoint presentation includes lecture notes and includes three main sections: Introduction, Wetland Determination Criteria, and the Tools of Wetland Determination and Delineation.
The 95-page instructional guide provides information about the module and includes eleven sections: NCSR Wetland Ecology and Management Series Introduction, Wetlands Management I – Determination and Delineation, Module Description, Objectives, General Lecture Outline, PowerPoint Presentation with Instructor Notes, Wetland Determination and Delineation Laboratory, Resources, General and Comprehensive Resources, Details on Comprehensive Web Sites, and Sources for Digital Images.
The 17-page Wetland Determination and Delineation Laboratory “guides students through a hands-on experience to illustrate how determinations are preformed and how the boundaries of a wetland are defined.” The activity includes six sections: Introduction, Objectives, Procedure, Notes to Instructors, Wetland Determination and Delineation Data Sheet – Archived Information, and Suggested Assessment.
The 3-page Wetland Determination and Delineation Data Sheet – Field Observations document includes four sections: Summary of Findings, Vegetation, Soil, and Hydrology.
