Wetlands - An Introduction

Module Description: 

The NCSR Wetland Ecology and Management Series is provided by the Northwest Center for Sustainable Resources and includes seven modules. This series “is designed to support the instruction of wetlands topics at the undergraduate level.” The seven modules include Wetlands – An Introduction, Wetlands - Then and Now, Wetlands Management I – Determination and Delineation, Wetlands Management II – Compensatory Mitigation, Wetlands and Climate Change, Wetlands and Hurricanes, and Wetland Restoration in the Everglades.

Wetlands – An Introduction is the first of seven modules. This module defines wetlands and discusses their importance and the criteria used to distinguish wetlands from uplands. “The structural and physiological adaptations of wetland plants, wetland functions and the economic value of ecological services provided by wetlands are also presented.”

The PowerPoint presentation includes lecture notes and introduces wetlands as ecosystems. The main sections of the presentation include: Introduction and Context, Wetland Identification Criteria, Wetland functions, and Wetland values.
