Container Design: High School Lesson

Unit Description:

FLATE, the Florida Advanced Technological Education Center for Manufacturing, has developed a series of “Made in Florida” lesson plans to prepare students for careers in manufacturing. These Lesson Plans are intended to enrich science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) classes and provide your students with real world scenarios relevant to manufacturers throughout Florida. 

Each model lesson includes materials needed to “engage students with authentic and sometimes unresolved challenges faced by manufacturing companies today.” 

Lesson Description:

This lesson from FLATE focuses on using math, science, and engineering to work through the assigned constraints of packaging and shipping Tropicana orange juice. In considering this topic, students will: 1) Design a new juice case (shipping box) for a new juice container and 2) Integrate and apply science, math, and technology. The lesson includes three challenges: Part 1 - Container Design, Part 2 - Shipping, and Part 3 - Distribution. 

The completion of the lesson in full takes multiple class periods. Resources available as part of this lesson include a Teacher Lesson Plan, a Lesson Overview, a Teacher’s Lesson Guide Presentation, Student Worksheets for each challenge, Teacher Grading Rubrics for each challenge, and a Company Fact Sheet. 

For orientation purposes, viewers should begin with TROPICANA- Teacher Lesson Overview.pdf, which offers a description of the lesson as well as an overview of topics covered and the intended audience.

Lesson Contents:

The Lesson Overview document includes a description of the lesson scenario, lesson objectives, the approach to the scenario, as well as a description of the three learning challenges that make up the lesson.

The Lesson Plan document includes learning objectives, targeted subject areas and manufacturing levels, relevant Florida Department of Education Sunshine-Standards, required materials and supplies, a detailed sequence for both teacher presentation and student completion of the lesson, answer keys, and a section for extensions and additional resources.

The PowerPoint presentation provides an introduction to the Tropicana manufacturing process, packaging and container design, and distribution. It also introduces students to the challenge activities.

Each Student Worksheet, includes an introduction to the individual challenge, detailed instructions for activities, and a space for reflection on the activities.

The Teacher Grading Rubrics provide areas for assessment on each step of each activity, including presentations and reflection.

The Company Information Fact Sheet provides general information about Tropicana Products Inc., including their manufacturing process and education level and position requirements for students interested in the company.
