Galvanized Metal Lab
This three-page activity guide from Edmonds Community College provides a thirty-minute laboratory activity demonstrating the "effects of removing zinc from a galvanized piece of sheet metal." Students calculate the "reduction in thickness of the zinc, and the number of atoms lost based on the change in mass." Students gain experience taking measurements using a beam balance, in safe chemical handling, and in using algebra to balance equations. This activity builds knowledge of chemistry fundamentals. The activity guide includes the following sections: MatEd Core Competencies Covered, Equipment and Supplies Needed, Curriculum Overview, Module Procedures, and Evaluation Packet.
