This initiative produced a 23 video series that covers basic programming concepts. Each concept has two supporting videos - one explaining the concept in relatable, real life terms, and a second follow-along video so the viewer can immediately apply their new knowledge.
The videos convey information in a variety of learning styles including visual aids such as screen captures, light board work and props. Verbal descriptions and captioning is also available. The CIS-1111 videos have been included in all course modalities. The videos are embedded into each course shell as well as available through a YouTube channel for further review and student reference.
We would like to disseminate these videos to a wide audience. They would be appropriate for current students, career-changers, educators, facilitators, employers and anyone interested in learning to code. Videos are available free and on-demand on our YouTube channel, Complex Concepts Simply Put.
In the third year of our grant, tutorial videos for Sinclair's CIS 1111 course were added as a sustainable learning initiative. CIS 1111 (Introduction to programming) is a requirement for most of the degree and certificate programs at Sinclair College. The course has historically had a poor student success rate when compared to other core CS/IT courses. Based on prior experience with students using tutorial services, the videos were developed to provide visual and hands-on applications of programming concepts that some students struggle to grasp.
